Summer humidity here sits high for months at a time, and coastal suburbs get salt in the air on top of it. Timber shutters handle that fine in living areas when they're sealed properly, but put them somewhere with steam and standing moisture and the finish eventually gives way.

PVC doesn't absorb water. There's no grain to lift, nothing for moisture to soak into, and no painted surface that can bubble away from the substrate. The panels are UV stabilised through the material rather than coated on the surface, which is what stops them yellowing in west-facing windows after a few summers.

Every panel we fit has an internal aluminium spine running through the stiles. That's what keeps a wide panel straight instead of letting it sag over time under its own weight.

Rooms where PVC plantation shutters make the most sense

Bathrooms and ensuites. The obvious one. Constant steam, direct splashing near the bath, and windows that often sit right beside the shower.

Laundries. Similar moisture load, plus these rooms tend to be small and poorly ventilated.

Kitchens. Cooking steam and airborne grease both wipe straight off PVC without marking the finish.

PVC Plantation Shutter Questions

Do PVC plantation shutters go yellow?
Not if they’re UV stabilised through the material rather than surface coated. Cheap imported PVC can yellow in west-facing windows within a few years. Ask any supplier whether the UV protection is in the polymer itself or in the paint.
Are PVC shutters cheaper than timber?
Usually, yes. The gap depends on window sizes and configuration.
Can I use PVC plantation shutters outside?
No. PVC is an internal product. Aluminium is what you want for outdoor openings.
Are PVC shutters suitable for bathrooms?
This is what they’re best at. Steam and splashing don’t affect them.
Which louvre size should I pick?
89mm suits most windows. 114mm works well on large openings where you want maximum view. 63mm suits smaller windows and heritage-style homes.
