Bathroom Plantation Shutters

Bathrooms are what PVC plantation shutters are best at. Constant steam, direct splashing near the bath, and windows that often sit right beside the shower are exactly the conditions the material was chosen for.

Steam and standing moisture

PVC does not absorb water. There is no grain to lift, nothing for moisture to soak into, and no painted surface that can bubble away from the substrate. The panels are UV stabilised through the material rather than coated on the surface, which is what stops them yellowing in a west-facing window after a few summers, and every panel has an internal aluminium spine running through the stiles so it stays straight.

Why not timber in a bathroom

We do not recommend it. Timber shutters handle Queensland humidity fine in living areas when they are sealed properly, but put them somewhere with steam and standing moisture and the finish eventually gives way: the grain lifts and the finish separates. PVC is the material for wet rooms.

Bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and kitchens

Bathrooms and ensuites are the obvious one. Laundries carry a similar moisture load and tend to be small and poorly ventilated. In kitchens, cooking steam and airborne grease wipe straight off PVC without marking the finish. Plenty of families run PVC through the whole house, but these are the rooms where it is the only sensible choice.

A window inside the shower

Occasionally someone wants a shutter in a bathroom that has to handle direct water rather than just steam. That is the one case where we look at aluminium, which is built for weather, instead of PVC.

On louvre size, 89 mm suits most windows, 114 mm works on large openings where you want maximum view, and 63 mm suits smaller windows and heritage-style homes.
