Post-war brick and timber: Chermside, Aspley, Stafford
Most of the homes we shutter on Brisbane’s northside were built before anyone thought about plantation shutters, and that shapes the job. Chermside, Aspley, Stafford, Kedron and Everton Park are full of post-war brick and timber houses with windows that were never meant to take an off-the-shelf panel. Casements that swing out, awning windows with winders in the way, architraves that sit deeper than a standard frame allows for. We measure every opening on the day, build to those numbers, and match the existing trim rather than asking you to repaint around a white that isn’t quite yours.
Heritage streets: Wilston, Grange, Windsor, Ascot, Clayfield
Closer in, the houses get older and the standards get higher. Wilston, Grange, Windsor, Ascot, Clayfield and Nundah are heritage territory: high ceilings, original joinery, and in plenty of cases a character overlay that limits what you can do to the street-facing side of the house. Shutters here need to look like they were always part of the place. That means tall panels, timber painted in a period-correct white, and frames scribed to walls that have settled over eighty years and are nowhere near square anymore.
New builds and big glass: Carseldine to Taigum
Head north past Carseldine into Bridgeman Downs, Bracken Ridge, Fitzgibbon and Taigum and the brief flips. Newer builds, bigger glass. Stacker doors onto the deck, a wall of windows in the living room, sliding doors that get used forty times a weekend. Hinged panels get in the way on openings like that, so we’ll normally suggest bi-fold or sliding track shutters that fold clear and leave the walkway open.
Bayside: Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Brighton
Sandgate, Shorncliffe and Brighton get the bay breeze and everything that comes with it. Timber shutters on the water side of a house there will eventually lose the fight with salt air, so we’ll usually recommend PVC and be upfront about why.
The one thing every northside suburb has in common is the afternoon sun. From about two o’clock a west-facing room becomes hard to sit in, and the usual fix is a blockout blind that turns the place into a cave. Adjustable louvres let you angle the light out while still seeing the yard.

Which shutters suit a Brisbane home

How much do plantation shutters cost in Brisbane?
Most homes fall between $4,500 and $12,000, depending on how many windows you have, their sizes and which range you choose. Chris measures every opening and gives you the exact price on the day, with installation included and no hidden costs.
What is the downside of plantation shutters?
They cost more up front than blinds, hinged panels need room to swing so big stacker doors suit bi-fold or sliding track shutters better, and timber is not the right choice on the salt side of a bayside home. Against that, adjustable louvres tilt the western sun out from two o’clock on without turning the room dark, they add value, and they last 20+ years with almost no maintenance.
Do you cover the southside of Brisbane?
Our patch is Brisbane’s northside, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast. We do take on jobs south of the river from time to time, Bulimba is one you can see in our projects, so ask when you book and we will tell you straight away whether we can get to you.
My house has a character overlay. Can I still have shutters?
Yes. The overlay limits what can change on the street-facing side, and internal shutters do not alter the facade. In Wilston, Grange, Windsor, Ascot and Clayfield we fit tall panels in timber painted a period-correct white, with frames scribed to walls that are nowhere near square any more, so they look like they were always part of the house.
PVC or timber for Brisbane humidity?
Both work across most of the northside. Near the bay at Sandgate, Shorncliffe and Brighton, and in bathrooms and laundries, PVC is the safer choice because it holds up to salt air and moisture without warping or discolouring. In the heritage streets, timber gives the tall period-correct panels those homes suit.
Is a DIY kit from a hardware store a good alternative?
Off-the-shelf panels are made to standard sizes, and most northside windows are not standard: casements, awning windows with winders, deep architraves and walls that have settled. We measure every opening on the day, build to those numbers, install for you, and back it with a warranty of up to 20 years.
How long does it take from quote to installation?
Our Australian-made range is delivered in 2 to 3 weeks and our premium imported range in 4 to 6 weeks. Installation itself is usually completed in a day for most homes.
Are plantation shutters still in style?
