Plantation Shutters built for Brisbane homes and the QLD climate

Most of the homes we shutter on Brisbane’s northside were built before anyone thought about plantation shutters, and that shapes the job. Chermside, Aspley, Stafford, Kedron and Everton Park are full of post-war brick and timber houses with windows that were never meant to take an off-the-shelf panel. Casements that swing out, awning windows with winders in the way, architraves that sit deeper than a standard frame allows for. We measure every opening on the day, build to those numbers, and match the existing trim rather than asking you to repaint around a white that isn’t quite yours.

Closer in, the houses get older and the standards get higher. Wilston, Grange, Windsor, Ascot, Clayfield and Nundah are heritage territory: high ceilings, original joinery, and in plenty of cases a character overlay that limits what you can do to the street-facing side of the house. Shutters here need to look like they were always part of the place. That means tall panels, timber painted in a period-correct white, and frames scribed to walls that have settled over eighty years and are nowhere near square anymore.

Head north past Carseldine into Bridgeman Downs, Bracken Ridge, Fitzgibbon and Taigum and the brief flips. Newer builds, bigger glass. Stacker doors onto the deck, a wall of windows in the living room, sliding doors that get used forty times a weekend. Hinged panels get in the way on openings like that, so we’ll normally suggest bi-fold or sliding track shutters that fold clear and leave the walkway open.

Sandgate, Shorncliffe and Brighton get the bay breeze and everything that comes with it. Timber shutters on the water side of a house there will eventually lose the fight with salt air, so we’ll usually recommend PVC and be upfront about why.

The one thing every northside suburb has in common is the afternoon sun. From about two o’clock a west-facing room becomes hard to sit in, and the usual fix is a blockout blind that turns the place into a cave. Adjustable louvres let you angle the light out while still seeing the yard.

Plantation shutters in Brisbane have to do a different job to the ones you see in catalogues shot in Melbourne or Sydney. The light is harder, the summers run longer, and most of the housing stock was built with airflow in mind rather than insulation. A shutter here is doing three things at once: cutting the sun, keeping the breeze moving and looking like it belongs on a house that may be a hundred years old or built last spring. We manufacture in Brisbane to Brisbane measurements, and every job starts with someone from Two Shade standing in your living room with a tape.

The inner ring is Queenslander country. Paddington, New Farm, Red Hill, Bulimba and Wilston are full of timber homes on stumps with casement windows, VJ walls and character overlays that shape what can go on the front of the house. Plantation shutters suit these homes better than almost anything else, provided the panels are tall enough, the louvres are the right width and the white is close to the existing trim rather than a bright showroom default. We paint to match, not to approximately match.

Across the southside and out west, the mix shifts to post-war brick and seventies lowsets. Mount Gravatt, Carindale, Indooroopilly, Kenmore and The Gap have windows that were never a standard size, often with aluminium frames sitting inside deep timber reveals. Custom manufacturing is the whole point here. A stock panel leaves gaps you'll notice every afternoon.

The newer estates on the outer edges, from Rochedale down to Springfield and up through Bracken Ridge and Taigum, are all about glass. Stacker doors, floor-to-ceiling living room windows, alfresco areas that open right up. Hinged panels get awkward at that scale, so bi-fold and sliding track shutters do most of the work in those homes.

Anywhere near the river or the bay, from Bulimba and Hawthorne round to Manly, Wynnum and Sandgate, moisture is the thing to plan for. PVC shutters hold up to humidity and salt air in a way timber eventually won't, and we'll tell you which one your house needs rather than which one we'd prefer to sell.

What ties all of Brisbane together is the western sun. Adjustable louvres let you tilt it out from two o'clock on without turning the room dark, which is the main reason plantation shutters have overtaken blinds in this city.
