Plantation Shutters for Raked and Unusual Windows

Most of the homes we shutter were built before anyone thought about plantation shutters, and plenty of their windows were never meant to take an off-the-shelf panel. The fix is not a compromise on style, just more care in the templating and the build.

Raked windows: the Bulimba job

This Bulimba living room had a raked window, the top edge angled rather than square. Raked windows are one of the trickier shapes to shutter well: getting the angle wrong by even a small margin shows up as a visible gap along the top. So the frame was templated directly off the window to match the exact pitch of the rake, and the panels and surrounding frame were built to follow the same line rather than squaring off the top and losing part of the glass. With the frame following the raked line, the louvres tilt through their full range just as they would on a rectangular window, and the finish sits flush against the angled reveal.

Non-standard sizes and deep architraves

Post-war brick and timber homes through Chermside, Aspley and Stafford have casements that swing out, awning windows with winders in the way, and architraves that sit deeper than a standard frame allows for. The established suburbs of Moreton Bay and the hinterland have non-standard window sizes and existing trim colours worth matching. We measure every opening on the day and build to those numbers.

Heritage joinery and walls that have settled

In the heritage streets the standards get higher: high ceilings, original joinery and a character overlay that limits what you can do to the street-facing side. Shutters there need tall panels, timber painted in a period-correct white, and frames scribed to walls that have settled over eighty years and are nowhere near square any more.
