How a mid rail works, and where it earns its place
A mid rail is a horizontal rail across a plantation shutter panel that splits it into two independently tilting banks of louvres. The upper half can be angled open while the lower half stays shut, or the other way round.
Full-height door openings
This Caboolture job runs from floor to head height. Four white PVC panels cover the full span, each split by a mid rail. Looking out from inside, the top half of the opening catches the greenery and the neighbouring rooflines, while the bottom half looks straight onto the fence and the paved area beside the house. Being able to set those two halves differently is more useful there than it would be on a small window, where one tilt setting covers the lot.
Street-facing windows
On a window that fronts the street, privacy and light pull in opposite directions. Louvres that tilt through their full range mean you are not locked into fully open or fully closed, and a mid rail lets the bank at eye level sit closed while the bank above brings the light in. The Burpengary job is a street-facing window in white PVC for exactly that reason.
Keeping a wide run looking like one piece
On the Caboolture opening the frame was set square with a head trim finishing the top, the stiles line up across the width and the mid rails sit level from one panel to the next. That is what stops a wide set looking piecemeal, and it is the detail that matters most on an opening that tall.

What is a mid rail on a plantation shutter?

Do I need a mid rail on a small window?
Usually not. On a small window one tilt setting covers the lot. A mid rail earns its place on tall openings and street-facing windows where the top and bottom of the glass are looking at different things.
Is a mid rail the same as café-style or tier-on-tier shutters?
No. Those are different constructions. A mid rail keeps a single panel and splits its louvres into two banks. Tell Chris what you are after at the measure and he will tell you what suits the opening.
Can the two halves be set differently?
Yes. That is the point of it. On the Caboolture opening the top half looks at greenery and rooflines while the bottom half looks at a fence, so they are set differently most of the day.
Which material takes a mid rail?
The Caboolture and Burpengary jobs are both white PVC, which has an internal aluminium spine in the stiles to keep tall panels straight. Timber panels can be built the same way.
